Diego Alves, Rodrigo Caio, Diego Ribas and Filipe Luis win the Copa Libertadores with Flamengo

After a thrilling final, Flamengo won the Copa Libertadores 2019 as they clinched a 2-1 win over River Plate. Several Maurice Revello Tournament graduates played a role in this win : Diego Alves, Rodrigo Caio and Filipe Luis have been included in the starting XI while Diego Ribas came off the bench.

A crazy final for a historic title. Thirty-eight years after their first title in this competition, Flamengo lifted on this Saturday the Copa Libertadores trophy for the second time in their history as they beat title holders River Plate (2-1).

However, the Argentinians thought for a long time that they would keep the trophy after the opener scored in the first half by Rafael Borré (seen at the Maurice Revello Tournament 2014). However, the impossible happened : by equalizing after 89 minutes and then scoring the winner in the injury time, Gabriel Barbosa sent the Mengao fans on cloud nine !

After avoiding obstacles such as San José (Bolivia), LDU Quito (Ecuador), Penarol (Uruguay), Emelec (Ecuador), Internacional (Brazil) and Gremio (Brazil), Flamengo have beaten the Buenos Aires giants.

Several players seen in the past at the Maurice Revello Tournament played a role in this memorable success.

Firstly, Rodrigo Caio and Diego Alves. The 26-year-old defender and the 34-year-old goalkeeper (12 games started each) are among the three most used players by Flamengo in this Copa Libertadores 2019 alongside Bruno Henrique, who has been named best player of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the emblematic 34-year-old attacking mifielder Diego Ribas took part in 9 games and found the net against San José in the group stage. And not forgetting Filipe Luis, the 34-year-old left-back who arrived from Atletico Madrid this summer, and started all the games from the quarter-fnals.

Although they all played in prestigious clubs during their career, no one of these Brazil internationals has won the most prestigious competition in South America before this week-end. Now it's done !
