CONCACAF U20 : Mexico held to a draw despite Lainez’s strong display, Canada in trouble

From 1st to 21st November, the CONCACAF U20 Championship is held in Bradenton (Florida, USA). Thirty-four nations, divided into six groups, take part in a preliminary round. The leader of each group will qualify for a final round where six nations, divided into two groups, will try to clinch one of the four qualifying spots for the U20 World Cup. During the Matchday 3 of the preliminary round, many players seen previously at the Maurice Revello Tournament have shone. Recap !

Mexico – Jamaica : 2-2

The clash of the group B ended on a draw. One player especially distinguished himself : the Maurice Revello Tournament 2018 best player Diego Lainez. The Club America starlet has been involved in the two goals scored by his side. He notably got a penalty in the second half, eventually converted by the in-form José Macias (four goals in the tournament).
Unfortunately for the Mexicans, Jamaica levelled the scores thanks to a stunner netted by Tyreek Magee with twenty minutes remaining.

Group B : Mexico 7 pts (+11), Jamaica 7 pts (+7), Aruba 4 pts, Grenada 3 pts, Nicaragua 3 pts, Saint Martin 1 pt.

Honduras – Cuba : 3-1

Against the group’s favourites, the Cubans produced an interesting display. They have notably netted the opener thanks to Rolando Oviendo and had several opportunities to add another goal. However, the captain Danny Echeverria and his teammates missed theses chances and have been punished by a Honduran side, more accurate front of the net.

Group C : Honduras 9 pts, Cuba 6 pts, Antigua and Barbuda 6 pts, Belize 3 pts, Dominican Republic 3 pts, Sint Marteen 0 pt.

Panama – Canada : 2-1

Canada’s hopes of CONCACAF U20 progression suffered a major blow. Quickly reduced to 10-men following the Michael Baldisimo’s sending off, the Canadians have been beaten during this potential group decider. Saed Diaz netted a brace for Panama. Enough to allow his side to claim the win despite the equalizer netted by Noble Okello. The latter, seen at the Maurice Revello Tournament 2018, netted his third goal in as many games played just after the half time.

With two games to go, the Mathieu Choinière & co’s destiny is out of their hands.

Group D : Panama 9 pts, Canada 6 pts, Dominica 6 pts, Guadeloupe 3 pts, Martinique 3 pts, Saint-Kitts-and-Nevis 0 pt.
