The Toulon Tournament’s most memorable moments : 2012, Herrera, Fabian and Mexico wrote history (14/16)

Ahead of the 46th edition of the Toulon Tournament, which will be held from 26th May to 9th June, we’ve delved into the archives to relive some of the most memorable moments in the tournament history. Every Tuesday and Friday, we look back at the most thrilling facts provided by the competition. Today, throwback to 2011, when Mexico clinched a historical title on 2012.

Despite it took place a few years ago, on 2012, the 40th edition of the Maurice Revello Tournament is one of the most memorable in the competition's history. May 2012, the Olympic Mexico squad landed in the South of France to play the Tournament, last preparation before the Olympic Games.

In the group B with France, Morocco and Belarus, Mexicans had a showy competition start. Against Moroccans, "El Tri" snatched a spectacular win (4-3), thanks to a hat-trick from the talented Marco Fabian. The current Eintracht Frankfurt player showed an impressive efficiency all along the competition. The Mexican offensive midfielder was, a few days later, the unique scorer of his team during the only loss Mexico had face to France (1-3).

After his four goals during the two first games, Fabian was again the Mexico key man, as he netted a brace against Belarus in the last group round game (2-1). Yes, you're right : Fabian scored six goals in only three games and led his country to the Maurice Revello Tournament semi-finals !

In the final four, "El Tri" was confronted to Netherlands, with Davy Propper and Steven Berghuis. Despite the Dutch opener, Mexico managed to come back and qualify for the final, thanks to Hector Herrera, Candido Ramirez, Raul Jimenez and... Marco Fabian again (4-2). With his seventh goal of the competition, Fabian equalized the legendary Alan Shearer's record, the only player who scored seven times during a Tournament so far.

Mexico, irresistible since the beggining of the competition, did not weaken in final and hammered Turkey (3-0). Candido Ramirez gave the lead to his team during the first half. If he didn't score in this game, Fabian gave an assist to Raul Jimenez though. Finally, Alan Pulido completed the won of Mexico in the last minutes.

Mexican exulted : "El Tri" clinched the Tournament for the first time in their histoy. It was also the first time that a Mexican player was named as the best player of the competition, as Hector Herrera won this reward. Same for the top scorer trophy, awarded to Marco Fabian.

The 2012 Maurice Revello Tournament is still today an astounding path for the young Mexicans. They delighted the world of football a few weeks later after they won the Olympic Games against Brazil and Thiago Silva, Marcelo or Neymar...
