The Toulon Tournament’s most memorable moments : 2008, the Chile of Marcelo Bielsa stole the show (11/16)

Ahead of the 46th edition of the Toulon Tournament, which will be held from 26th May to 9th June, we’ve delved into the archives to relive some of the most memorable moments in the tournament history. Every Tuesday and Friday, we look back at the most thrilling facts provided by the competition. Today, throwback to 2008 when the Maurice Revello Tournament fans have discovered the Marcelo Bielsa-fever !

May 2008 : the Maurice Revello Tournament have experienced the Marcelo Bielsa’s madness. For its 36th edition, the Toulon Tournament has welcomed the former Olympique de Marseille boss. The Argentinian became the Chile’s head coach one year ago. He was also in charge of the youth teams including the U21 squad that played the Toulon Tournament 2008.

For their first ever participation at the tournament, Chile came with a golden generation : fifteen players from that squad became senior internationals few years later : we think notably about Eduardo VargasGary Medel, Fabian Orellana, Gonzalo Jara, José Pedro Fuenzalida or Christopher Toselli.

Their baptism of fire has been memorable. The Marcelo Bielsa’s teams are renowned for their attacking style of play and Chile have offered to the Toulon Tounament fans some inspring displays during two weeks : eleven goals netted in five games, five goals conceded, seven different scorers : the spitting image of Marcelo Bielsa !

Drawn in the group A alongside France, Japan, Netherlands, the Chileans stole the show in their opener against the French national team.
The Bielsa boys found themselves down to 1-3 before the hour mark but the South Americans have reversed the trend as they have eventually won the game… 5-3 ! Goals from Fuenzalida, Martinez, Lorca, Sagredo and an own from Louvion were enough to secure a win for Chile.

Then, La Rojita earned two wins in a row against Japan (2-0) and Netherlands (2-0) and finished atop of the group. In the semi-finals, Chile earned a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast (2-1) thanks to goals scored by Morales and Orellana.

In final, Chile have to face a tough challenge : an Italian national team composed of eleven future internationals like Claudio Marchisio, Ignazio Abate, Sebastian Giovinco, Graziano Pelle or Antonio Candreva.

Against the Italians, the young Chileans couldn’t find the net for the first in the competition and were finally defeated as Pablo Osvaldo scored the winner for Italy (0-1). Despite this loss, the Chile’s participation is still in the memories ten years later. The fans were gripped with the style of play, the displays, the team spirit shown by this Chilean squad !
