Trincao, Antony, Gilmour… these Maurice Revello Tournament graduates who made their Champions League debut

Each year, several players seen at the Maurice Revello Tournament burst onto the European scene with their club. This season, they are fourteen to have made their first appearance in the UEFA Champions League.

They have lived their baptism of fire in the most prestigious club competition. Like a learning of the high level, sometimes it has been cruel for some of them. Few years after taking part in the Maurice Revelo Tournament, these players are testing themselves in the Champions League. If the learning was difficult for some of them, others came through admirably.

Signed by FC Barcelona from SC Braga few months ago, Trincao (Maurice Revello Tournament 2018) has lived an eventful first experience in Champions League : 5 appearances including 4 games started. The Portugal international hasn’t managed to be decisive but he learned, notably this week when he faced Juventus, a team led by his model, Cristiano Ronaldo (0-3).

Among the English clubs involved in the Champions League, they are three youngsters to have earned playing time in Europe. Caiomhin Kelleher (Maurice Revello Tournament 2019) is one of them as Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp included him in the starting XI against both Ajax (1-0) and Midtjylland (1-1). One win, one draw and above all two solid displays from the Irish goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Daniel James (Maurice Revello Tournament 2017) has asted Champions League football for the first time with Manchester United as the Welshman came off the bench against PSG and Basaksehir. Not enough to help Red Devils to avoid a group stage exit.

On the contrary, Billy Gilmour will see the next round. The Chelsea’s Scottish youngster (Maurice Revello Tournament 2018) played several minutes against Sevilla (4-0) and has even started the last game against Krasnodar (1-1), delivering a promising performance.

In France, Jordan Amavi (Maurice Revello Tournament 2014) has started 5 of the 6 games played by Olympique de Marseille in Champions League. For a disappointing tally of 4 losses and one win. Injured, the left-back missed the final game against Manchester City.
The Rennes players Serhou Guirassy (Maurice Revello Tournament 2016) and Gerzino Nyamsi (Maurice Revello Tournament 2018) weren’t more successful. Even if the striker scored two goals while the defender started two games, their club didn’t win any single game in this campaign.

One of the Maurice Revello Tournament 2019 best players, Antony has been luckier for his first European campaign. The Brazilian winger has started 4 games with Ajax, scoring one goal during the 2-1 over Midtjylland. During this game, he faced another Tournament graduate, the Bulgarian midfielder Bozhidar Kraev (Tournament 2016) who made 4 appearances in the UCL this season with the Danish club.

Teammate of Antony during the Maurice Revello Tournament 2019, Wendel has lived a more difficult first European campaign. The midfielder, who appeared 4 times in the UCL, and his club Zenit finished at the bottom of their group.

In addition to Trincao mentioned previously, other Portuguese talents enjoyed their Champions League bow. Fabio Vieira  and Joao Mario  (Tournament 2019) who played respectively four and two games with FC Porto in the group C. They have crossed path with other fellow Maurice Revello Tournament graduates and debutants in the UCL : Pedro Rodrigues (Tournament 2016) and Ruben Vinagre (Tournament 2018) who helped Olympiakos to clinch the third place, meaning the Greek giants will play the Europe League after the winter break.
