Sophia Smith named NWSL MVP at only 22 !

The 2018 Sud Ladies Cup best player has became this Thursday the youngest player ever to win the National Women Soccer League MVP award.

« Sophia Smith is world class, her potential is limitless. I’ve told her that if she keeps at it, she’ll be one of the best forwards in the world in no time”. These powerful words pronounced on 2021 August by the football's all-time top international goalscorer Christine Sinclair (187 goals in 304 caps with Canada) resonate a lot more one year later.

This Thursday, Sophia Smith has been named MVP of the National Women Soccer League, the prestigious North American championship, undoubtedly the most competitive league in the world.

At 22, Smith became the youngest player in the NWSL history to win the best player award. A deserved reward for the 2018 Sud Ladies Cup best player who has been the Portland Thorns’ attacking spearhead this season with her 14 goals in 18 league games.

This rare and special honour could taste better on Sunday as Portland Thorns face Kansas City Current in the NWSL final. The opportunity to put the icing on the cake.
